Notes for Joseph (Spouse 1)
From “ALL THE QUAKER HADLEYS,” with revisions. Anunpublished compilation of works by Harlan Hadley, Lyle Hadley, andWallace Hadley. Hadley Society Files. Chapter 3:

JOSEPH HADLEY farmer, of Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware. Son of Simon
II and Ruth (KERAN) HADLEY of Messuage Plantation, Chester County, PA. Born 25 Aug 1698 Ireland; buried Mill Creek Meeting, New Castle County; married 25 Aug 1721 Amy GREGG at Center Meeting, Centerville, Delaware, daughter of John and Elizabeth (COOK) GREGG. [Children named]

... Joseph was a gay blade as a youth. Various meeting records mention him with strong disapprobation, in conjunction with such 'wicked practices' as card playing and dancing and 'vicious frollicking and fiddling'. At least once he was suspended for behaviour out of unity with the meeting and barred from attendance until he had convinced his elders that he regretted his violations and would not repeat them.

Amy GREGG's parents, like Joseph's had been English Quakers in Irelandand part of the large scale migration of co-religionists to Pennsylvania. While early in the 1900s HADLEYs in upper Delaware believed to be descendants of Joseph-Amy, later evidence indicates their male line ended with the deaths of their son John's sons, Simon and Samuel.

The Delaware census of 1800 of Montgomery Alabama, as compiled by Gerald and Doris Ollar Maddux, shows no HADLEYs. Many had joined, ca 1750, the family hegira to North Carolina. There is no record of any members of the Joseph-Amy branch being among them."
